JFT Course Information
Part 61 vs. Part 141
Part 61
Part 61 is the most flexible option. A training
syllabus is not required and not subject to
F.A.A. approval under part 61, therefore part 61
allows the instructor to arrange lessons and
lesson plans to suit the individual needs of the
students. No formal ground school is required
under part 61 but all students must pass the
written knowledge tests for the particular
certificate or rating. Because the regulations
governing part 61 training are less strict, more
minimum hours are required for each certificate
or rating.
Part 141
Part 141 consists of a fully F.A.A. approved and
standardized training syllabus. Formal ground
instruction is required and all students must
pass the written knowledge tests for the
particular certificate or rating. Stage checks
are required to be administered and passed
throughout the training. F.A.A. inspection of
the school and its facilites on a regular basis
is required. Detailed records of each students
progress are kept and are subject to F.A.A.
regular inspections. Because 141 training
adheres to these strict standards, fewer hours
are required for each certificate or rating.
